Restore the Strength of Your Jaw with a Dental Bone Graft
A dental bone graft can restore your jaw if you have suffered bone atrophy. There are a variety of conditions which can cause the loss of tissue in the jawbone, including tooth loss and periodontal disease. Jawbone deterioration can impact the stability of remaining teeth, affect your candidacy for dental implants, and change your appearance. With over 30 years of experience rebuilding smiles, Dr. Eric Fisher can perform dental bone grafts at our office in Plainview, NY. We use advanced technology and techniques to provide excellent results in the utmost safety.
Am I a Candidate for Bone Grafting?
The best way to determine if you are a candidate for a dental bone graft is to visit our office. During your appointment, Dr. Fisher can evaluate your oral and overall health. He can also take x-rays and scans using our advanced Plameca® 2D/3D panoramic scanner to assess your jawbone.
Planning Your Treatment
If you decide to proceed with a bone graft, Dr. Fisher can recommend the most effective type of graft based on the areas of your jaw affected by atrophy and your goals for the treatment. We can offer several grafting types, including:
- Socket grafts: This type of graft is typically performed after a tooth extraction to prevent jaw deterioration.
- Block bone grafts: When a large quantity of jawbone tissue has been lost, this procedure uses donor tissue to restore natural density and strength.
- Sinus lifts: If the sinus cavity is too close to the jaw for safe implant placement, this procedure can raise the sinus floor and make room for implants.
You can discuss your sedation options with Dr. Fisher during your initial appointment. He can explain each stage of the procedure in detail to ensure that you feel comfortable every step of the way.
What to Expect
During your grafting procedure, Dr. Fisher will create a small incision in the gums above the area of bone loss. Next, he will pack the area with grafting material and anchor the graft to the surrounding bone tissue. In some cases, he will cover the area with a specialized membrane to improve healing. Finally, Dr. Fisher will close the incision with sutures.
Your recovery process will depend on the type of graft you receive. We can provide you with specific postoperative instructions to promote a quick recovery. On average, bone grafts require three to nine months to integrate with the surrounding jawbone tissue.
With over 30 years in the field, Dr. Fisher can perform the treatment you need to restore the strength of your jaw and the appearance of your smile.
During your recovery, you will need to return to our office for periodic checkups so Dr. Fisher can monitor your progress. Once you have healed completely, Dr. Fisher can place your implants or perform any other procedures you require.
