Ease Dental Phobia with Sedation Dentistry

For many patients with dental anxiety, visiting the dentist can be a traumatic experience. Often, patients avoid the vital care they need, which can be detrimental to their overall oral health and wellness. To put our patients at ease during treatment as well as ensure their comfort, Dr. Eric B. Fisher offers sedation dentistry options with each of his services. Patients can take advantage of nitrous oxide or oral sedation during their visit to our Plainview, NY, dental practice. At your consultation, our team can review your unique needs and preferences and tailor your treatment accordingly.

To minimize phobia and maximize comfort, we offer nitrous oxide and oral sedation.

Why We Offer Sedation

While anesthetics block pain, sedation can increase relaxation during treatment. As a result, we usually combine the two to maximize your comfort. This is especially helpful for patients who struggle with dental phobia. This type of anxiety is unfortunately common: up to 40 million adults in the U.S. actively avoid the dentist, and in turn, do not receive important dental care. Reasons for dental phobia can vary, ranging from:

  • A sensitive gag reflex
  • A low pain threshold
  • An inability to sit still
  • A need for extensive dental work
  • Prior traumatic experiences

Regardless of the cause, evading dental care can lead to severe gum disease and even tooth loss. For our patients' benefit, we have integrated sedation dentistry, and can recommend the best option for you.

Sedation Options

Depending upon the procedure, Dr. Fisher and his team offer two types of sedation: nitrous oxide and oral sedation.

Nitrous Oxide

Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a temporary form of mild sedation. This is delivered as a gas and inhaled through the nose. Laughing gas helps patients to relax, while enabling them to remain awake and responsive during treatment. Throughout the procedure, we can easily adjust the concentration of nitrous oxide to enhance patient comfort. Because it is a gas, the effects of nitrous oxide wear off quickly. As a result, it is the only option that allows patients to drive themselves home after their appointment.

Sedation dentistry is safe and reliable, helping even our most nervous patients relax.

Oral Sedation

Dr. Fisher is certified to provide oral conscious sedation. Ingested as a pill about one hour before treatment, this moderate sedative leaves patients conscious but with no memory of their visit. Because patients remain calm and responsive to direction, oral sedation is one of the most common sedatives used in dentistry. We often recommend it for more extensive procedures, such as tooth extraction or dental implant placement. As the effects can take several hours to wear off, you must schedule a friend or loved one to drive you to and from your appointment.

Candidacy

While most patients qualify for sedation dentistry, it is not always the most appropriate option. Patients with obstructive sleep apnea can react poorly to sedatives and may benefit from other routes. Dr. Fisher may also recommend another alternative for children. During your visit, we can review your medical history and conduct a thorough examination to ensure you are eligible for sedation.
